California inspires images of sun, sand, surfing, Hollywood, health foods, beautiful national parks of Yosemite and Death Valley and the Pacific beaches; in reality, it is much more complex. Resort areas are scattered throughout the state, but the major ones are Estes Park and Grand Lake in the north, Colorado Springs in the south central area and Durango along the Navajo Trail in the southwest. Denver is the capital. Boulder is the major student centre of the state, where competition for jobs may be strong. Previous BUNACers have worked in Estes Park (north of Denver in the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park) and Keystone (west of Denver), both about 1½ -2 hrs drive from Denver where the main airport and bus station are. Both areas are surrounded by stunning mountains and are great places providing you enjoy the outdoors and don’t mind making your own entertainment. Accommodation is very difficult to find in these and other mountain resorts, so you will have to be flexible (take a sleeping bag, just in case). Remember to take a warm jacket with you as it can get very cold if living at high altitude. Some years BUNACers have reported snow in July and September! Website: www.colorado.com

Maryland
It borders on Washington DC and includes many suburban communities that are part of the Washington metropolitan area. Maryland has a stretch of Atlantic Ocean coast with several resorts, including Ocean City, where jobs are likely to be available. Ocean City is a very popular resort area for holidaymakers and BUNACers. It has 10 miles of beach and the long boardwalk is packed with amusement arcades, fast food outlets, funfairs and hotels, providing hundreds of jobs for BUNACers and other exchange students. The weather is usually warm, creating the perfect location for a summer working holiday. Accommodation is fairly expensive ($70-$100 per week) and you must be prepared to share (probably with more than 2 people per room). If going to Ocean City, without a job or accommodation, go as early in the summer as possible as these are harder to find towards the end of June. Ocean City has a style of its own (it’s often compared to Blackpool) and people either love it or hate it! It’s certainly not a place to go if you want to get away from other British or Irish students – the town is packed with them. The motto of Ocean City could easily be “work hard, play harder”. It takes about 8 hours to get from New York City to Ocean City by bus. The Ocean City International Student Services (www.ociss.com) office is a good source of information and assists with job hunting, housing, social security, etc. before and after you arrive. Massachusetts
Has more historic spots in a smaller area, more picturesque towns and more of a sense of America’s colonial past than any other state. Summers are warm and pleasant and resorts are plentiful along the coast. If going to Boston, be sure to plan ahead as competition for jobs can be stiff and accommodation difficult to find. The main tourist areas are Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard and many wealthy Bostonians have homes there. The job situation here is reliant on the weather which is generally good. Many participants go to areas like Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and Hyannis and though there tend to be a lot of jobs, accommodation can be very difficult to find and is often very expensive. Provincetown, one of the largest towns on Cape Cod, is on the tip of the Cape, and gets very busy during the summer with artists, playwrights and craftsmen (including a large gay community), and the tourists and hangers-on who come to watch them. The easiest way to get to Cape Cod from NY is by bus – about 5-6 hours/approx. To get to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard you will need to take the ferry from Wood’s Hole or Hyannis. New Jersey
The New Jersey most Americans think of and dislike is the northern industrial area close to New York City. However, the southern part is quite rural and the New Jersey coast (Cape May, Long Beach Island and Barnegat Light) is an area of exceptional beauty with many lakes, rivers, 40 state parks and 11 state forests. There are plenty of possibilities for summer work and for jobs in Atlantic City (the Las Vegas of the east coast) in the large hotels. The ‘Jersey Shore’ is one long sandy beach, full of amusement parks, fast food outlets, hotels, etc. It’s a favourite destination for New Yorkers, either for their holiday, or just a weekend at the beach. Wildwood is a popular place among BUNACers and other international students – be prepared to work hard and play hard. Accommodation is easier to find if you arrive early and is more affordable if a group of you rent together. Previous BUNACers recommend seeing several places before signing a contract because although prices are similar, quality varies widely. Website: www.state.nj.us, www.wildwoods.com

New York
New York City is where most Bunacers start and end their journey. NYC is called ‘the city that never sleeps’ and it is a great place to spend a few days before your flight home from NY. We would strongly suggest not to work in New York City unless you pre-arrange work and accommodation as competition for jobs is fierce, affordable accommodation is almost impossible to find and the cost of living is high – money disappears quickly! There is so much more to New York state than just New York City. The Adirondack Mountains are beautiful and many resorts are located in the Finger Lakes region in the centre. There are also resort areas on Long Island (including the exclusive Hamptons) east of New York City but competition from local students is great and accommodation is expensive. Don’t ignore the larger cities of Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and Albany. Many country clubs offer jobs outside the city while only being a short train ride away. North Carolina
The mountains and coast provide endless beauty. BUNACers work in the east coast beach resorts such as Nags Head, Grandy, Corolla, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Hatteras, Duck that are often referred to as the Outer Banks. Each summer, large numbers of holiday makers enjoy the clean beaches and casual lifestyle. Activities include swimming, windsurfing, sailing, parasailing, kayaking, fishing and hang gliding. Most enjoy the area but say that transportation is a real problem. There is no public transport and the towns are spread out. Accommodation can be difficult to find in the Outer Banks (and fairly expensive) so we recommend arriving before 3rd week of June if you don’t have pre-arranged accommodation. The Midlands resort area of Pinehurst/Southern Pines also does well, although these are year round resorts and do not take on as much seasonal help. Websites: www.visitnc.com, www.outerbanks.com

Southern charm and growing industry. South Carolina has 331 miles of seashore, acres of cotton fields and forests in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Charleston and Columbia are the largest urban centres and Myrtle Beach is the centre of a large summer resort area which takes on substantial numbers of seasonal help. It is hot and humid. South Carolina has a long, sandy coastline full of holiday resorts. Myrtle Beach is very popular among BUNACers and American and international students. It’s pretty touristy, but there’s lots of sun, sea and sand and jobs! The general consensus seems to be that it is a nice area, nice beaches, a lot of other students, but that accommodation can be very expensive and hard to find if you arrive in late June or later. Transportation is not available (except for taxis) and it is difficult to get around as things are spread out. Further down the coast towards Georgia are the up-market resorts of Hilton Head and the pretty town of Charleston. It takes about 24 hours (non-stop) to get from New York City to Myrtle Beach by bus.
